The show that I chose that I never watch is Sponge Bob Square Pants. The characters relationship appear to all be friends. They say very harsh things to each other and then they help each other out when times get rough. The language is very rough at times. This is based on listening to them communicating with each other. The sound off appear to be concern for each other. It was difficult for me to understand there expression to the various characters in the cartoon. The assumption is that verbal cues may not always express one's true feelings. It is important to get to know a person to understand and relate to the changing language one may speak.

  1. I watch Spongebob with my son and its funny to hear their conversation. With the sound off we always have a different assumption of their conversation. We assume things and when we watch it with the sound we realize some assumptions are not always right. I told my kids to watch a show with the sound off and they were lost and they kept complaining they couldn't see the show because they didn't understand anything by just looking at it and not hearing it. It was a fun assignment to do. Great post!

  2. Hi Dotsy,
I found cartoon are very hard to follow some times. I think because there is no real emotion in cartoon it hard to follow. I think it is hard to have assumption with cartoon because the plot is so hard to follow sometimes. Great post cartoon is a great way to learn communication because children love their cartoons.

  3. Hello Dotsy! Sponge Bob Square Pants was one of my youngest sons favorite programs when he was 2 years old. From what I've heard the show is very inappropriate for young children now. They use many profanity words that I do not allow my son to listen to. I can imagine how difficult it may have been to read the body languages and nonverbal cues from the cartoon characters. From what I can remember about Sponge Bob and the other Characters, they are always moving around so much and such busy body characters. This alone can be very challenging to receive the message without volume. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Dotsy,

Your comments support the fact that we need to be good listeners and be able to recognize other cues in the communication that will support our understanding of the other person. At there same time we want to make sure that our own body language isn't seining out the wrong message. Thank you for sharing.

  5. I think you made an excellent point that things appear different when the sound is off. I experienced the same thing with the television show I watched. One of the harder things I experienced with the show I watched was who the characters were and the situation taking place. It was hard to know what was actually going on.
